Finding Purpose: Finding Your Why

"He who has a why to live can bear almost any how." - Friedrich Nietzsche

What is Purpose?

Purpose is a sense of direction and meaning in life. It is your WHY. It's what gives us a reason to get out of bed in the morning and motivates us to pursue our goals and aspirations. Purpose is often linked to our values, passions, and strengths, and it can manifest in various ways, such as through our work, relationships, hobbies, or community involvement.

Lets Look At The Problem

“Life is never made unbearable by circumstances, but only by lack of meaning and purpose.” – Viktor Frankl

Study after study has shown that, at best, only 25% of the US feel like they are living a purposeful life. The effects of a lack of purpose can vary depending on the individual and their circumstances. Here are some of the most commonly seen symptoms of lack of meaning or purpose:

  • Depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. When individuals don't feel like they have a reason to get out of bed in the morning, it can lead to a sense of hopelessness and disconnection from the world around them.

  • A chronic struggle to find the motivation to pursue goals and take action towards their desires.

  • Lower self esteem and a struggle to find deep joy and satisfaction with daily activities.

  • A feeling of disconnection and isolation from others, which negatively impact relationships and social connections.

  • Struggle to stay focused and productive in their work and other areas of life.

It's important to note that everyone experiences a lack of purpose from time to time, and it's a normal part of the human experience. But when we find ourselves stuck in this place there are powerful practice to shift your experience and drop into a deeper more meaningful life.

Finding Your Purpose

Consider these other suggestions around finding your meaning

Reflect on your values and passions

What are the things that matter most to you? What brings you joy and fulfillment? Reflecting on your values and passions can help you identify what's important to you.

Explore new experiences

Trying new things and stepping outside of your comfort zone can be a great way to discover new passions and interests. Exploring new experiences can also help you develop a sense of curiosity and wonder about the world around you.

Connect with others

Building relationships and connecting with others can provide a sense of community and belonging, which is essential for our well-being. Finding ways to contribute to your community or help others can also give you a sense of purpose and meaning.

Self-Reflection

Regular self-reflection can help you stay connected to your values, passions, and purpose. Taking time to check in with yourself and evaluate your goals and aspirations can help you stay focused and motivated towards what's truly important to you.

Ask Yourself “What Is My WHY?”

I believe in this question as I not only use it In my practice but in my own life as well. What is my why? Why do I wake up in the morning? Why am I choosing to engage in any particular aspect of my life?

For many of us, much of the time, life can feel monotonous, boring, and heavy. I find that the idea of living your day with a level curiosity or excitement sounds like a lofty goal to some and trite to others, so this is a message to the former. I’m hear to challenge that idea with a simple question: Why do you wake up in the morning?

Most of us will say.. Well because I just do. Because I have to. What other choice do I have.

That's the norm. Most of us will start there. Most of us will not start out with an obvious why or one that feels significant but I believe as this question gets pondered, as you challenge yourself to search for it, it will set you on a path of self discovery that will lead to a life you CHOOSE rather than one that happens to you. A life that NOURISHES you rather drains than you. I believe by leaning into this question you will find yourself leaning into more places of joy, satisfaction, and peace.

Final Thoughts

“The two most important days in life are the day you born and the day you discover the reason why.” – Mark Twain

Remember that purpose is an ongoing journey that requires self-reflection, exploration, and a willingness to step outside of your comfort zone. Know that purpose is a subjective experience and what gives purpose to one person may not give purpose to another. So, take the time to discover what's truly important to you and what brings you a sense of meaning and direction in your life. With dedication and effort, you can find you why and live a more fulfilling and satisfying life.
